Taking prescribed medicine seems like a no-brainer. The instructions are right on the packaging and you create a habit of taking it at the same time every day- perhaps with a meal. That certainly is manageable for someone who takes one pill daily and needs no reminders.

There's no doubt that while caregiving is a loving responsibility, it can also be incredibly stressful and isolating. That's why t's so important that caregivers take both mental and physical breaks as often as possible.

The Association of Long Term Care Planning (ALTCP.org) has put together a list of tips for visiting parents in Long Term Care Facilities. Their list was generated by 20 "experts" in the field and I'm thrilled to be part of this group. The tips range from communicating with your family member, to understanding the nuts and bolts of the facility. I think you'll find each and every tip informative and valuable. While some pertain to a solely residential facility setting, others are just great general caregiving tips as well.

If you or your parents are considering moving to an assisted living facility (ALF), you’ll want to add The Residences in West Kendall to your list of places to check out. It’s owned and operated by United HomeCare, a non-profit home health and community care organization in MIami-Dade County and it's located right next to the West Baptist Kendall Hospital. I went to see it for myself and met with the executive director.
